Twenty-nine hydraulic jacks have been used to lift the building, and almost 1,000 tons of supporting structure, eight feet into the air. Rubber-wheeled platforms will then be used to transport the building, in three sections, to its new site. The site left vacant will be used to create additional parking for airport passengers.
In its new location, the building will be the centerpiece of a structure housing the Port Authority Police, a garage for emergency vehicles, administrative offices and a museum with exhibits showcasing Newark Airport's rich history. Famed aviator Amelia Earhart was present for the dedication of the building in 1934.
