PORT AUTHORITY ADVISES AIR PASSENGERS TO ALLOW EXTRA TRAVEL TIME DURING THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEK

Thanksgiving holiday travel at the New York-New Jersey region’s three major airports will limit the amount of parking available for air travelers.

“I encourage air travelers to give themselves plenty of time to travel to the airport and to check in for their flight during this heavy travel period,” said Robert J. Kelly, the Port Authority’s Director of Aviation. “We are doing everything we can to make the travel experience for our customers as pleasant as possible.”

More than 1.1 million passengers on 15,400 flights are projected to use John F. Kennedy International, Newark International and LaGuardia airports during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period, a 2.3-percent jump over last year. The biggest increases in passenger traffic will be at JFK and Newark airports, which are expected to see 2.9 percent more passengers than last year.

The increase in airport passengers is expected to put a strain on airport parking at each of the region’s three airports. Travelers are urged to have someone drop them off at a terminal at any of the three airports. Passengers also can reach the airports in a taxi, limousine or bus, or by using other transportation services. Call 1-800-AIR RIDE for up-to-date information on other transportation options.

Passengers traveling to Newark International Airport also can be dropped off at the monorail station at Lot E, which will allow the driver to avoid traffic in front of the passenger terminals.

Those who drive to Newark Airport are encouraged to call 1-888-EWR-INFO and press 22 before they leave home for an update on parking availability. Additional parking updates can be obtained near the airport by tuning in to the highway advisory radio at 530 AM. Air travelers also can have someone handle the parking chore for them. Valet parking is available at Newark International Airport for $18 a day and is open around the clock. Airport roadway signs direct travelers to the valet parking area.

Customers who use Newark’s economy lots at $8 per day can save time by traveling directly to Lots G and H in the airport’s North Area. Free, frequent bus service is available to all terminals from Lot G and H.

If airport lots are temporarily full, travelers to Newark can take advantage of several private off-airport facilities, mostly along Routes 1 & 9 South, that provide free shuttle service to the passenger terminals.

If you are dropping someone off or picking up an arriving passenger at Newark International Airport, you can park for up to a half hour for $2 in one of the hourly lots next to the terminals.

Luggage carts are available in parking Lots D and E and at monorail stations in all terminals at Newark for customers who have lots of luggage. Vans circulate in the parking lots to help customers with luggage. If you are traveling with someone, consider dropping off your companion and your bags at the terminal before parking your car.

At LaGuardia Airport, the long-term parking lot is expected to fill up quickly this week. For specific information on road and parking lot conditions at LaGuardia, call 718 533-3400 or tune into airport radio at 530 AM for the latest updates.

Parking also is expected to be tight at JFK. For specific information on road and parking lot conditions at JFK, call 718 244-4444 or tune into airport radio at 1630 AM for the latest updates. The Port Authority operates free on-airport bus service between the passenger terminals, the long-term parking lots and the A train subway station at Howard Beach.
