LAGUARDIA AIRPORT HOLD EMERGENCY DRILL Crash-Fire Teams to Respond to Simulated Crash on Saturday, Oct. 14

Police, firefighters and other emergency service workers will respond to a simulated airplane crash at LaGuardia Airport on Saturday, October 14, at 10 a.m. This exercise, which will include Boy Scouts with fake wounds, will give area rescue teams the opportunity to hone their skills in the most realistic atmosphere possible.

"For airport emergency crews, this two-hour drill is extremely important," said Warren Kroeppell, General Manager of LaGuardia Airport. "This is a dress rehearsal where they can learn to work together and perfect their skills."

The drill will involve the use of personnel, rescue equipment and communications from a number of participating agencies. They include Port Authority Police operations and maintenance teams, New York City fire and police departments, the Nassau County Police Department, U.S. Coast Guard, American Red Cross, New York City Medical Examiner's Office, Salvation Army and the New York City Department of Corrections, which operates at nearby Rikers Island. Approximately 100 volunteers from various Boy Scout troops will serve as "victims," complete with fake wounds and other injuries.

Media wishing to cover the event should arrive by 9 a.m. Signs will direct the media to a specially designated parking lot adjacent to the Port Authority Administration Building near the Marine Air Terminal.
