PRESS ADVISORY -- Simulated Airplane Crash at Newark Airport to Test Emergency Responders. Drill Scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 30

A simulated crash of a 727 aircraft will be staged at Newark International Airport at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, to test the preparedness of emergency responders.

The drill, staged each year to meet FAA requirements, will have a new wrinkle this year. As part of the drill, airport personnel calling for emergency responders will be told that rescue crews from Newark and Elizabeth are unavailable because of a motor vehicle accident on Routes 1 & 9 in Elizabeth and a fire at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. This will require emergency responders from neighboring Essex and Union County towns - including Maplewood, Bloomfield, Montclair, Nutley, Fairfield, Roselle Park, Kenilworth and Garwood - to assist specially trained Port Authority Police crash, fire, rescue crews in handling the airport incident.

The drill will be staged in a remote part of the Newark Airport and will not impact airport customers or operations.
