YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS TO GET A SNAPSHOT OF BUSINESS WORLD AT UNIQUE PORT AUTHORITY-SPONSORED PROGRAMS

With the assistance of the Port Authority, nearly 40 middle and high school students will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to own and operate their own businesses during two unique programs beginning this week in Southeast Queens.

The young participants will develop business plans, market and sell products, deal with customers and employees, and handle challenges they will face in the business world.

The Youth Entrepreneurship Program - geared to students in grades 6 through 8 - consists of 12 weekly sessions of 1½ hours each beginning at 3:30 P.M. Tuesday, November 16. The sessions will be held at the Morning Star Baptist Church, 114-44 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica, NY. Sheldon Roach, a retired middle school principal who believes in "education as a vocation," will serve as the instructor.

Twenty-five high school students will participate in a similar program called Business Leaders of Tomorrow. The weekly program, which will run through June 2000, will be held from noon to 8 P.M. Saturdays beginning November 20 at the AirTrain project's Jamaica field office in Queens, NY. The instructor is Rachel Gordon, who also works with young people at the Queens YMCA.
