TALLER THAN STATUE OF LIBERTY, GIANT PORT CRANES TO SAIL UNDER VERRAZANO BRIDGE FRIDAY - PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

Taller than the Statue of Liberty and strong enough to lift 10 elephants, four new container cranes bound for New Jersey’s Global Marine Terminal will sail under the Verrazano Bridge this Friday at about 5 P.M. The ship is currently anchored at Gravesend Bay and is visible from Brooklyn.

A specially designed ship, the “Zhenhua 3,” must await low tide to deliver its unique cargo, to ensure that the 213-foot-tall cranes will fit under the bridge. The cranes, the newest and most modern in the port, are capable of spanning 21 containers across the deck of a containership. They are twice as fast as those they will replace at the terminal, located on the border of Jersey City and Bayonne.

The four cranes, constructed by Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) in Shanghai, left on their journey for New Jersey on September 9. They will be used to service the next generation of super-containerships expected to serve the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Global Marine Terminal is the only privately owned container terminal in the Port.

Note: suggested location for viewing passage under the Verrazano Bridge is waterfront park along Belt Parkway in Brooklyn.
