The Senator Lipman Saturday Seminar Series will resume October 16 at Essex County College, Essex Room, in Newark. Essex County College and the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors will assist the Port Authority in producing the monthly series.
"The late Senator Lipman spent much of her public life assisting minority, women and small businesses in obtaining contracting opportunities within the public and private sectors," said Michael Massiah, Director of the Port Authority's Office of Business and Job Opportunity. "It is our intention to keep the senator's advocacy and spirit alive through these monthly seminars and to enhance the ability of small, minority and women-owned businesses to participate in the region's burgeoning economy."
The monthly business seminars will assist local minority, women-owned and small businesses win more construction contracts at Newark International Airport and throughout the region.
Featured presenters will be Walter Logan, president of the Delta Organization, construction managers for the renovation of retail space in Terminals A and B at Newark International Airport; Robin Odita of Continental Airlines' EWR Global Gateway Project; and a representative from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The seminar will begin with a tribute to the late Senator Lipman for her work as a champion of minority and women interests while in the New Jersey Senate from 1971 to May 1999.
Remarks will be given by Newark Mayor Sharpe James, who succeeded her in the New Jersey Legislature. Also, the Port Authority's Michael Massiah will make a presentation in her honor.
The sessions, which run from 9 A.M. to noon, will cover topics ranging from strategies to increase business growth and development, to contract bidding and technical and financial assistance. Future seminars will be held on November 20; December 18; January 22; February 19; March 18; April 15; May 20; and June 17.
