Officers from as far away as Egypt, Ireland, Jordan, Singapore and Taiwan will attend the international school, along with representatives from the FBI, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York State Police and other North American airports and seaports.
The school will run from October 4 to 22 at the Port Authority Police Academy at the New Jersey National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt, N.J.
"This class will be the first to take advantage of a unique, advanced international program to enhance security training worldwide, and to build a global communications network to improve security at seaports and airports," said Port Authority Chairman Lewis M. Eisenberg. "The expertise of the Port Authority Police in airport and seaport security is recognized around the globe, and they have developed a valuable program to share their expertise with other law-enforcement agencies."
"Travelers and consumers depend on the security of these international gateways every day," said Port Authority Executive Director Robert E. Boyle. "The Port Authority is pleased to have this opportunity to show law-enforcement officers around the globe that our police offer the most sophisticated training available to protect the world's airports and seaports."
The school will be the first international law-enforcement educational program in the world devoted to both airport and seaport security, said Fred V. Morrone, Port Authority Director of Public Safety/Superintendent of Police.
Director Morrone said the international school was conceived during discussions among members of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police.
"We have developed an exciting program featuring instructors from the Port Authority Police, representatives of federal, state and local agencies, and other law-enforcement professionals," Director Morrone said.
The wide-ranging curriculum will include classes on preventing cargo crime, money laundering, air smuggling and terrorism. The officers also will attend classes on intelligence-gathering techniques, port security, cultural diversity and ethics, and go on field visits to Kennedy International and Newark International airports, Port Newark and the Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal.
