PATH RENOVATING CHRISTOPHER ST. STATION IN MANHATTAN

A top-to-bottom renovation of the Christopher Street PATH station in Greenwich Village will begin on Monday, September 20, part of an ongoing program to brighten and clean all four PATH stations in Manhattan.

The Christopher Street Station, at Hudson Street, will be closed for about a month. PATH customers should use the 9th Street Station instead.

"We are renovating each station in turn, from turnstiles to platforms," said PATH Director and General Manager Michael P. DePallo. "Under this renovation program, PATH will paint entrance areas to stations, and install new wall and floor tiles, handrails and other improvements. The results, we hope, will please riders for years to come." Under the program to renovate all four PATH stations in Manhattan, work on the 14th Street station will be completed September 19. The schedule calls for work to be done at the 9th Street Station in October, and at the 23rd Street Station early next year.

Station public address announcements will be made and posters and flyers will be distributed throughout the system before each station closes. PATH's Web page also gives updated information for travelers, at www.panynj.gov.

PATH, the rail transit operating subsidiary of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, operates 24-hour service between terminals in Newark, Hoboken and lower and midtown Manhattan. It served a record 64.9 million riders last year.
