TRAFFIC ADVISORY -- PHASE TWO OF GWB ROAD CONSTRUCTION SET TO BEGIN

The Port Authority will begin the second phase of a $2.5 million paving project that will mean a smoother ride for drivers using the lower level of the George Washington Bridge on Friday, August 27, at 10 P.M.

The eastbound lower level will be closed for paving.

The closing will take place from 10 P.M. on Friday until 10 A.M. on Saturday. Delays of 30 minutes or more are expected on Friday night starting at 10 o'clock and on Saturday morning starting at 8 o'clock.

During the first phase of this project, the eastbound approach road to the lower level received a new, smooth asphalt surface. The second-phase work will provide a similar riding surface but is much more extensive, and will require at least one 12-hour shift.

Road paving is a weather-sensitive operation that must be postponed during winter months and during heavy rains. Work will continue on the eastbound lower level through early winter, and may resume in the spring of 2000.

Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes and travel times during the periods of construction when the heaviest delays are expected, and to listen to radio traffic reports for updates on travel conditions.

For weekly construction schedules, motorists can also call the Port Authority's Customer Connection: 800 221-9903 (TTY: 800 733-8899). They can also check the Port Authority's Web site for up-to-date work schedules.
